10 Fantastic Learning Breaks in Europe for 2026

Bouldering in the National Park

Even absolute beginners will rapidly be ascending sheltered Peak District crags on this short course. Learners will master tying in, safety techniques and several climbing techniques, as well as descending. With a maximum of six learners to each tutor, there is a lot of one-on-one guidance and personalised targets. This program is open to anyone aged 13 and over, ranging from first-time climbers to those with some indoor experience. It is day-only course, but there is a list of suggested, budget-friendly lodging nearby, such as campgrounds, hostels, B&Bs and pubs with rooms. Abstract Painting in Spain

This historic hillside village, a picturesque white village in Andalucía, around 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the stimulating setting for this art retreat. Painters of all abilities – including beginners – will be taught how to conceive and execute abstract artworks. A portion of the time will be spent outdoors, working on structured activities out in nature. These sketches and paintings will then be expanded upon in the workspace, with guests creating a number of abstract landscapes in acrylics to be shown in the village. The group has sole use of the venue, which is centered on an central patio and has a roof terrace with views over the hills. The price covers five days of painting tuition; full board; and an excursion to the nearby fortress and additional points of interest.

Vegetarian Cooking in Portugal

This sun-drenched culinary holiday, based at a riverside villa in the central Algarve, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Participants will learn to produce selection of small dishes, take part in a hands-on falafel session, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are visits to the village market and a local vineyard to sample Portuguese wines, along with free time for strolls by the nearby river, to relax on the deck or swim in the pool. The farmhouse, a former farmhouse, has multiple rooms, plus safari tents in the grounds.

Hip Hop in Buckinghamshire

Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an energizing, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The daily schedule each day is a party-style group warmup, followed by three 90-minute workshops covering different urban dance forms, then an 60-minute freestyle session to show off those solos. Dancers are divided into levels according to skill level, so it is suitable for those who are completely new to popping and locking, right up to advanced dancers or teachers. The camp doesn’t include accommodation but there are several hostels and hotels nearby, and it is under an hour by train into London.

Sea Shanty Break in Cornwall

St Ives is the perfect spot for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will learn historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and try their hand at composing original ones. There will be voice exercises, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The holiday is based at a rural hotel with views of the bay. All meals are provided, including a traditional tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and evening meals. Grog, unfortunately, is not provided. Everyone join in: “What will we do with the drunken sailor …?”

Creative Writing in Crete

Author and tutor Greg Mosse conducts the regular sessions on this authors' getaway. He covers everything from plot, character development, setting and tension, to submitting work to publishers. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the beginning and end of the week. The holiday is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the base of the Lefka Ori – 10 one- and two-bedroom cottages surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to come along). On the final evening, aspiring writers celebrate with a musical performance in the garden and a final meal.

Beginners' Apiculture in Wales

A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a host of courses on sustainability: from creating habitats to making pallet furniture. This weekend course will help participants learn the fundamentals of beekeeping, explore the life cycle of honeybees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. The weekend is also a chance to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed woodlands, which are habitat for polecats, otters, dormice, bats and rare birds. Bed and breakfast the night before is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging during the course is 97 pounds.

Sailing for Beginners in the Blackwater Estuary

These recently launched summer sailing weekends are spent on Wayfarers and keelboats on the estuary in Essex. They are aimed at adult beginners starting out or more experienced mariners who want a refresher. Sailors can improve their steering, build their seamanship and aim for the Royal Yachting Association’s certification levels in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and overnight options, staying in simple dorms in the waterfront training centre. The non-residential package includes packed lunches, while the overnight option covers two nights’ accommodation and full board, from hearty breakfasts to evening barbecues.
