At a public statement, Big 12 chief stated that Notre Dame AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for recent comments about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame has a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. The AD has contended that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s bid to enter the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to advocating for the selection of the University of Miami.
“The ACC does wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we provide significant football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would make an effort to try to damage us in this procedure,” the athletic director said.
Miami ultimately secured the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the head-to-head matchup between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD also claimed that the ACC ran a targeted social media campaign over several weeks indicating its preference for Miami.
Later on Tuesday, Yormark responded to the allegations at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“My opinion is that his actions has been egregious,” Yormark commented. “He is completely out of bounds in his method and if he was in the room, I’d say to him the same thing.”
The response is especially striking given Bevacqua’s prominent position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of football independent Notre Dame.
The commissioner also highlighted the support the ACC gave Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, giving the Irish a full conference schedule and a berth in its championship game.
“It has been unacceptable,” Yormark said again. “It’s been unacceptable going after Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”
Rumors had circulated about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. Yet, Yormark's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a move less likely in the near term.
Notre Dame, who made the CFP championship game last season, have announced they will decline a bowl game after missing out this season.
