The International Skating Union have launched an investigation following a pair of Chinese ice dancers were seen holding an object resembling a toy ballistic missile during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast video captured the skaters waiting alongside a sizable prop shaped like a rocket labeled “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” area during the event.
The DF-61 represents a new China-produced ground-launched long-range weapon capable of transporting atomic warheads, which was unveiled at a military parade recently.
Officials have acknowledged of an unsuitable plush item seems to have been among those thrown on to the ice by audience members following a routine during the competition,” the organization stated in an emailed statement.
The item was then held by the athletes after their performance. We regrets this occurrence and will investigate further.”
Ren and Xing finished in eighth place out of ten teams during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to the American pair of the United States.
