Computer-created images purporting to depict Venezuela's president in custody after his apprehension by the US have garnered tens of millions of views across the internet.
Initial fabricated AI image apparently displaying him being escorted off a aircraft surfaced a brief time later. This image was unpublished by any official government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, confirming the picture was generated or edited with Google AI.
Additional synthetic images started circulating in the subsequent hours, seemingly depicting different views of Maduro under guard. Noticeable watermarks on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
SynthID says the further images were similarly produced using AI technology.
Donald Trump shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was published, synthetic images continued to spread but were modified to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation show these updated fakes were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector says these further images were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
