Democrats Left Weakened After Historic Shutdown Delivers Little Results

In the wake of 43 consecutive days, the longest federal government closure in the nation's history has concluded.

Government employees will resume obtaining pay anew. Public lands will resume operations. Government services that had been curtailed or suspended entirely will recommence. Air travel, which had become a nightmare for countless travelers, will revert to being only inconvenient.

What Has Been Achieved?

After the dust settles and the approval from the President's authorization on the budget measure becomes official, precisely what has this unprecedented shutdown achieved? And what were the consequences?

The Democratic minority, through their use of the legislative delaying tactic, were able to cause the shutdown although they constituted a minority in the chamber by rejecting a Republican measure to offer interim support to the government.

The Minority Position

They established an uncompromising position, insisting that the GOP members agree to extend healthcare financial support for financially struggling individuals that are set to expire at the year's conclusion.

When a handful opposition legislators broke ranks to approve resuming the government on Sunday, they received next to nothing in return – a promise of consideration in the Senate on the support payments, but no assurances of majority party approval or even a necessary vote in the House of Representatives.

Party Tension

Following this development, representatives from the liberal faction have been furious.

They have alleged Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer – who opposed the appropriations measure – of being privately involved in the reopening plan or just incapable. They've felt like their party folded even after special election wins showed they had an advantage. They worried that the shutdown sacrifices had been in vain.

Furthermore moderate Democratic members, like the Governor of California Gavin Newsom, called the government resolution "disappointing" and "submission".

"It's not my purpose to punch anybody in the face," he stated to the Associated Press, "but I'm not pleased that, dealing with this invasive species that is Donald Trump, who's completely changed established procedures, that we persist functioning by conventional approaches."

Political Ramifications

Newsom has potential national political goals and functions as a reliable indicator for the mood of the Democratic party. He was a steadfast advocate of Joe Biden who appeared to back the then-president even after his disastrous June debate performance against Trump.

Should he be positioning for stronger opposition, it represents a positive indicator for party leadership.

Majority Party Response

Regarding the former president, in the period following the congressional stalemate ended on the weekend, his attitude has transitioned from guarded positivity to victory.

On Tuesday, he commended GOP legislators and described the vote to reopen the government "a major success".

"We are restarting the United States," he declared at a military holiday observance at Arlington Cemetery. "It should have never been closed."

The former president, possibly detecting the opposition frustration toward the Democratic figure, joined the pile-on during a media discussion on Monday night.

"He assumed he would fracture the GOP, and the Republicans overcame him," Trump said of the Senate Democrat.

Looking Ahead

Although there were times when Trump appeared to be buckling – last week he criticized GOP senators for declining to eliminate the senate obstruction procedure to reopen the government – he ultimately emerged from the stoppage having made little in the way of meaningful compromises.

While his poll numbers have declined over the recent weeks, there's still a twelve months before GOP members have to encounter the electorate in the legislative races. And, barring some kind of basic governmental alteration, the former president never has to worry about facing voters subsequently.

Congressional Coming Agenda

After the resolution of the federal stoppage, the legislative branch will resume its regularly scheduled programming. While the lower chamber has largely been inactive for several weeks, GOP members still expect they will pass some substantive legislation before the forthcoming electoral season kicks in.

Despite multiple government departments will be supported until late summer in the shutdown-ending agreement, the legislature will have to approve spending for other governmental functions by the end of January to prevent additional closure.

Ongoing Challenges

Democrats, licking their wounds, could be desiring another chance to challenge.

Meanwhile, the subject of contention – insurance financial support – may develop into a critical matter for many millions of the population who will experience premium increases double or triple at the end of the year. GOP members neglect dealing with such constituent hardship at their own political peril.

Furthermore, this represents not the sole danger facing the Republican leader and the Republicans. One particular day that was expected to focus on the legislative financing decision was devoted to discussing the latest revelations concerning the late convicted sex offender the financier.

Other Challenges

Later on Wednesday, Legislator Adelita Grijalva was officially seated to her legislative office and became the last required endorser on a formal request that will force the lower chamber to schedule decision ordering the federal legal authorities to make public all its files on the Epstein case.

It was enough to prompt Trump to complain, on his online presence, that his financial resolution achievement was being diminished.

"The minority group are trying to bring up the disputed matter once more because they would try any approach possible to deflect on how badly they've done
