The relatives of teens unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a bar in a Switzerland's winter destination are facing an excruciating period of uncertainty for answers and pleading for any details about their loved ones via social media.
The fire engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Confirmed footage show the ceiling igniting as bottles with sparklers are raised in celebration.
Authorities have warned that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the victims of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of four dozen individuals and hurt another over a hundred. Authorities said on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with work still underway to locate the final individuals.
In the interim, families and friends have been using social media to appeal for information about their friends who were present at the venue that night.
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his parent.
The resident of a town near the city, informed a publication that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but did not locate him.
"I'm living a nightmare, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his companions had been located with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has indicated that six of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, who hailed from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has stated that he is deceased, without directly referencing the tragedy, honoring a "talented young man who carried with him passion and true sportsmanship."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His mother explained that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with friends and ended up at the bar.
"Someone with him told me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he couldn't see him anymore," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers said, "I've always been struck by his good nature and smile, alongside great responsibility. He would frequently offer to help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also present on that night, according to sources.
Her brother has posted an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are actively engaged with the developments.
