Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies

A group of image specialists in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of crimson flashes, one of the most elusive atmospheric displays on Earth, where bright red bursts become visible in the heavens.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists began their evening to capture the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get good weather that evening, but their expedition transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer commented.

While reviewing his files for a stellar landscape and found he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer explained. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, generated by thunderstorms. In contrast to lightning that strikes downward to the surface, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, forming structures that look like vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a such an event was recorded – unintentionally – in 1989, by a team at the University of Minnesota.

Brief and Ethereal Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are infrequently observed to the unaided vision, but one photographer got lucky. “I was coincidentally viewing right at an occurrence when it happened – an ideal happenstance viewing the correct area of the firmament and I saw a short crimson illumination,” he explained.

Seeing the phenomena was a goal for the photographer, an honored night scape photographer. “It seems that you are observing an impossible sight, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it’s really interesting to witness.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Capturing a such an event needs a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the individual said. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

Another photographer said it was among the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I was able to observe the Milky Way glowing above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of energy swayed above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he said.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no other images showing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in the same photograph.

“It was one of those moments when you know you’re witnessing something you’ll probably never see again.”
