Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was found shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the blast had happened on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
