Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Exits After Pivot Towards Fried Chicken.

A head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit peak pizza while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been removed after disagreements with its directors.

Leadership Change

The former CEO is leaving after just two years in charge, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the company's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for more than two decades, had attempted to pivot Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.

Board Tensions

Sources suggest that there was tension between Rennie and the directors over his focus and direction, although the company's official statement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.

Recent Product Launch

In September, Domino's launched its poultry offering – which Rennie referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.

While the business is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as planned, it regards fried chicken as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Statement

Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing finding the suitable leader to direct the disciplined execution of that development approach.”

Market Challenges

Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said orders fell by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Competitors are also struggling. Another major chain revealed the closure of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Responding to customer preferences towards better nutrition, Domino's has rolled out light options, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 kcal as well as plant-based and gluten-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a personal has 909 kcal.

Acting Management

Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and previously worked for the gambling company a well-known operator. It is thought that she does not want to take on the top job long-term.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a multiple current expansion and efficiency programs that we will be focused on executing at speed.”

She said these comprised further work on the company's procurement system and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also in need of a full-time CFO until March 16, when a new appointee joins from the beverage producer C&C Group. Until then, Snow is interim finance chief.
