Twelve months back, the landscape was completely separate. Prior to the national election, considerate citizens could recognize America's significant faults – its inequities and disparity – however they still could identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A country where constitutional order meant something. A nation led by a respectable and ethical official, despite his advanced age and declining health.
Currently, this autumn, numerous citizens hardly identify the nation we reside in. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are collected and forced into vehicles, sometimes denied due process. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his adversaries or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively freed itself of routine media oversight as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, law firms, media outlets are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as nobility.
“America, just months before its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has tipped over the brink toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, stated in August. “In the end, more quickly than I imagined possible, it did happen in this country.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. It is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we have become, and the speed at which it unfolded.
However, it is known that Trump was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling initial presidency and following the alerts linked to the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – even after the leader directly said publicly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – enough Americans chose him instead of Kamala Harris.
As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to understand that we’re only several months into this presidential term. What will an additional three years of this downfall leave us? And if the three years becomes a more extended duration, since there is no one to stop this ruler from opting that a third term is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?
Admittedly, all is not lost. We will have congressional elections in 2026 which might bring a different governmental control, if Democrats retake either chamber of Congress. There are public servants who are striving to apply some accountability, for example representatives currently starting a probe concerning the try to cash appropriation from legal authorities.
And a presidential election in the next cycle could initiate our journey to healing exactly as the previous vote set us on this unfortunate course.
There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed in the past days in the No Kings rallies.
An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the slumbering force of America is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare during the fifties or during the sixties activism or throughout the Watergate scandal.
During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
Reich says he recognizes the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. As support, he cites the widespread marches, the broad, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to sign government requirements they report only approved content.
“The slumbering entity consistently stays dormant until some venality grows too toxic, some action so offensive of the common good, certain violence so loud, that he has no choice but to awaken.”
It's a positive outlook, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the crucial issues endure: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?
Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My negative thoughts suggests that the final scenario is accurate; that everything might be gone. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, convinces me that we must try, by any means we can.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more fully, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For others, it may be working on political races, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to safeguard electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we lived in a separate situation. In the future? Or in several years? The fact is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to continue fighting.
