In this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from sleeping youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly creature he had imagined.
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled types, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.
Naturally, such a setup needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.
You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
