Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
