The UK authorities has placed an additional eleven further destinations to its travel alert list concerning the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated beverages.
This revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a global increase in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of notable events including the deadly death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Authorities official the minister said that every traveler should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official advised.
"If something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete register of countries noted as carrying a threat of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
