A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
